Term 4, Week 8

November 30, 2022

Principal's Piece

Dear Parents and Carers

Thank you to everyone who came along to enjoy our Christmas Concert last Friday evening. The children enjoyed performing for you and are proud of the performance that they created for you. Thank you to all staff - there were many different moving parts that were coordinated to create a successful evening - well done to all!

Yesterday we also received some more very exciting news! Earlier this year, Miss Sophie's Year 2 class submitted some artworks for the 2022 CEWA Angelico Art Exhibition. We have received word that one of the artworks submitted has been chosen as our Executive Director, Dr Debra Sayce's Christmas card for 2022. Congratulations to Year 2 for choosing to be involved in the exhibition. We celebrate the fantastic news that art from Kununurra is being seen by numerous people this Christmas.

This week our Year 6 students have spent time at East Kimberley College participating in the 2022 transition program. This is an exciting time as they prepare to move on to the next step in their educational journey. Early next week, we will continue the end of year celebrations with our Graduation Celebration Mass on Monday and the Awards morning on Tuesday.

Whilst we know that the end of the year is approaching quickly, thank you to those families who have been working on improving their child's school attendance. As we all know, missing days for no particular reason soon adds up to a lot of lost learning time. Missing one day per school week, will add up to a loss of over two years worth of learning time by the end of Year 12...

Thank you also to those families who have finalised their school fees for 2022. As announced recently, we have reduced our fees for 2023, so it is hoped that this will support all of our community.

At the final mass next week, we will farewell our Graduates, along with any families leaving us. Bishop Michael has informed us that Father Joel, who has served our parish for 10 years, will also be leaving, but not until February. We will take the opportunity to farewell him also, due to the school holiday break. We will miss Fr Joel, and wish him all the best as he moves to the Wollongong Diocese.

If your family has a little one starting Kindy, please make contact with us so that we can save a space for them and complete enrolment forms etc.

The next in our series of teasers for the 2023 St Patrick's Quiz night is about the Ord River Irrigation Scheme:

"How many gates are there in the Kununurra Diversion Dam?"

The answer to last week's question:

"Why was Canberra chosen as Australia's capital city?"

is

"Neither Sydney nor Melbourne would agree to the other being declared the capital."

The compromise was that parliament would sit in Melbourne until a dedicated city was built, but that the site would be in New South Wales and at least 100 miles away from Sydney. Nor could it be located on the coast. The second criterion was for defence reasons; a city on the coast was considered to be too vulnerable to attack in times of war.

A small reflection from Winnie the Pooh:

"You're braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think."

~ A.A. Milne, Winnie-the-Pooh

Go well this week.

Year 3 News

In Year 3, Humanities and Social Sciences consists of Civics and Citizenship, Geography and History. This term, we focussed on Civics and Citizenship. Students have been building on their understanding of this subject through the concepts of democracy and participation. We visited many organisations in Kununurra to understand how and why community groups create rules and make decisions, and reflected on our own participation in the local community and how this contributes to society.

We were fortunate to visit the Shire of Wyndham East Kimberley, where we were shown around the different departments and met lots of important people. When we stopped at the Infrastructure Department, we looked at drones and equipment to help build infrastructure around town and viewed maps showing where streetlights are located. We then made our way to the conference room, where the Councillors meet to make decisions for the town. Here the Shire CEO spoke to us about his role and how decisions are made in the community. We got some great ideas for the community project we have been working on. The students have been holding United Nations meetings during lunch to discuss world issues. We also visited Kununurra Community Garden, where Mandy shared how people can contribute to the Kununurra community to build a sense of belonging.

In addition to these two excursions, several organisations visited our class. First, we had some Kununurra Police Officers who discussed rules and laws in the community and how they keep everyone safe and happy. Next, Catherine Grant, William's Mum, shared her experience of volunteering at Neighbourhood House. She went into detail about how you can contribute to your community. Neighbourhood House very kindly donated a box full of books for the students to take home and the left-over books went towards our Christmas Hampers. Thank you for your generosity and time.

We have had such a fantastic year of learning and had a lot of fun along the way. Thank you to Mrs Morgan, our Teacher Assistant, for all her hard work, guidance and knowledge this year. We couldn’t have done it without you. Have a happy and safe holidays!

Music & Science News

This term in Music, we have explored our voices as instruments, with both singing and beatboxing, while extending our understanding of rhythm through body percussion and drums.  We learned to read and play a sequence of chords to create a song on the ukulele and a sequence of notes to play on the xylophones or glockenspiels.  We then brought all these together to experience playing an assortment of parts to perform one song in unison as an “orchestra” – drums, ukes, xylophones, glockenspiels, triangles, clave sticks, tambourine and voices!

In Science, we have explored Chemical sciences through various experiments, focusing on observing properties of matter, noticing changes and learning to write a Lab Report to record our procedures and findings.  Students have practised staying safe and sensible scientists while they mix various materials, predict how they might change and recognise if the change is reversible or not.  We have investigated the properties of solids, liquids and gases by understanding how molecules behave in different states and how a change from one state to another can happen by adding or removing heat. As a bonus inquiry, Year 2 have discovered how to recycle paper and are looking at how they can start a student-powered paper recycling program next year!  Due to high demand, our final experiment of the year will be “elephant toothpaste” - just for the sheer delight of it! (plus to experience how to use a catalyst to cause a reaction in a safe environment ðŸ˜‰ shhh…)

Thanks to the students for remembering to respect the musical instruments as well as stay safe and sensible in science.

Moving House?

If you're leaving Kununurra at the end of this year, please let us know. It will help with our classroom planning for 2023.

No more soft plastics for recycling please...

Unfortunately, we cannot take anymore soft plastics for our recycling bin as the only company in Australia that processes it - REDcycle - has ceased accepting it for the time being. They are hoping to be up and running again in 2023.

In the meantime you could:

  • Store your soft plastics until REDcycle resumes collection again or another company takes on the role.
  • Choose to buy fewer products in plastic bags.

See ABC News for more details: https://www.abc.net.au/news/2022-11-09/redcycle-soft-plastics-recycling-program-suspended/101632220

Families at St Joseph’s to receive more affordable quality Catholic education

Families at St Joseph’s School will continue to benefit from high quality, Christ-centred and child-focused education in 2023.

Catholic Education Western Australia (CEWA) has announced that the fees parents pay at St Joseph’s will be $739 for a single child in 2023 (see attached email for information about fees for additional children). This compares to current fees of $1,137 for a single child.

The changes to school fees have come about as a result of changes to the overall funding for Catholic schools in Western Australia. Our school and CEWA are able to utilise a greater level of data to inform how we determine fees in a way that better matches our school and community’s unique context.

I hope families will welcome this news as indicative of our school’s commitment to meeting the needs of the Kununurra community we serve. The reduction in fees has been impacted by changes to the Federal Government’s funding model, which is now based on the parent community’s Direct Measure of Income (DMI). We are strongly committed to delivering the highest quality education alongside all our other current programmes offered in 2023 and beyond.

The change in fees is a strong sign of Catholic education’s continued place as the best value for money education option for young people in Western Australia.
