Dear Parents and Carers
It has been lovely to see that the rain has started; not so enjoyable that it arrives right on home time! We ask that everyone take more time during wet weather pick ups as the rain makes it just a little more dangerous on the roads. Thank you for your consideration.
Excitement is building this week as we prepare for our Christmas Concert. While this year's event will be quite different to previous ones, the children are looking forward to performing for you.
This week, we have received some exciting news about the work that our Pre-Primary students have been doing this year as part of the LAPS program that is supported by Guumbirr, Waardi, Monash University and the Australian Government.
Recently the LAPS (Language Acquisition for Pre-primary Students) Program for 2022 concluded, with our students ranking among the best in the Kimberley. Congratulations to the children on their efforts and a huge thank you to the staff in our Pre-Primary class - your work is fantastic. More information will be shared with our community about the LAPS successes in the coming weeks.
Earlier this week, I heard some terrific feedback about our Mini Vinnies students. They've been working hard to prepare hampers for those in need and while out and about purchasing food with Sr Julianne, they took the time to explain what they were doing and why to members of the public. It is always great to hear positive feedback about St Joseph's efforts to support our wider community, so congratulations to our Team Mini Vinnies!
As we look forward to 2023 can I please ask those families with a child on a medical plan (eg asthma or anaphylaxis) to book an appointment with the relative health professional to update your child’s Action Plan. It is important they are reviewed and updated each year so that we can provide the best possible response in the event of a medical emergency.
Thank you to those families who have finalised their school fees for 2022. If your family has not done so, please finalise these accounts before the end of face-to-face learning for this year.
We have worked with CEWA to review fees for 2023 and I believe we have achieved a great result. Please see below for further information.
If your family has a little one starting Kindy, please make contact with us so that we can save a space for them and complete enrolment forms etc.
The next in our series of teasers for the 2023 St Patrick's Quiz night is about the Federal capital of Australia.
"Why was Canberra chosen as Australia's capital city?"
The answer to last week's question:
"The King's representative is known as the Governor General - who is the current Governor General of Australia?"
is
"His Excellency General the Honourable David John Hurley AC DSC (Retd)."
A small reflection from Winnie the Pooh:
“If the person you are talking to doesn't appear to be listening, be patient. It may simply be that he has a small piece of fluff in his ear.”
~ A.A. Milne, Winnie-the-Pooh
Go well this week.

Preparing for Christmas in Pre-Primary!
Cake Stall
A massive thank you to the many parents who contributed cakes, fridges and an extra pair of hands towards the Kununurra Christmas Markets Cake Stall last Saturday. We are so lucky to be part of an event that promotes Kununurra culture, spreads the good news of St Joseph’s school and raises some much needed funds. A huge thank you goes out to Sarah Masters for her amazing face painting skills, which kept a constant line of happy faces buzzing around our table of delicious cakes. A big thank you to Sister Julianne, Ashlee Speirs and Steve Italiano who came along to help run the stall. We made a fantastic $420 for Mini Vinnies!

Year 3 News
The end of our amazing year is approaching and our not-so-little Year 3 class has bloomed, not only in height, but within themselves as little people with more wisdom, knowledge, courage and inner growth.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank Miss Elle for her dedication, integrity and commitment as a truly outstanding teacher and colleague, as well as being a beautiful friend. Thank you to my Year 3 class for giving us a year filled with some challenges that we managed to overcome, but more so with loads of fun, laughter and joy. I have missed the last couple of Christmas Concert dress rehearsals, but I am blessed to be back for your final one and the performance on Friday night. I can’t wait to watch you glow and show off your moves at the concert!
I wish you and your family a truly blessed Christmas and a safe holiday. All the best for next year. Keep up your good work and never stop striving to reach for the stars! God bless you all.
Miss Lee-lee
Year 3 Teacher Assistant

The Year 2 class has been learning about letter writing. Here they are, posting letters home.

Moving House?
If you're leaving Kununurra at the end of this year, please let us know. It will help with our classroom planning for 2023.

No more soft plastics for recycling please...
Unfortunately, we cannot take anymore soft plastics for our recycling bin as the only company in Australia that processes it - REDcycle - has ceased accepting it for the time being. They are hoping to be up and running again in 2023.
In the meantime you could:
- Store your soft plastics until REDcycle resumes collection again or another company takes on the role.
- Choose to buy fewer products in plastic bags.
See ABC News for more details:

Families at St Joseph’s to receive more affordable quality Catholic education
Families at St Joseph’s School will continue to benefit from high quality, Christ-centred and child-focused education in 2023.
Catholic Education Western Australia (CEWA) has announced that the fees parents pay at St Joseph’s will be $739 for a single child in 2023 (see attached email for information about fees for additional children). This compares to current fees of $1,137 for a single child.
The changes to school fees have come about as a result of changes to the overall funding for Catholic schools in Western Australia. Our school and CEWA are able to utilise a greater level of data to inform how we determine fees in a way that better matches our school and community’s unique context.
I hope families will welcome this news as indicative of our school’s commitment to meeting the needs of the Kununurra community we serve. The reduction in fees has been impacted by changes to the Federal Government’s funding model, which is now based on the parent community’s Direct Measure of Income (DMI). We are strongly committed to delivering the highest quality education alongside all our other current programmes offered in 2023 and beyond.
The change in fees is a strong sign of Catholic education’s continued place as the best value for money education option for young people in Western Australia.
