Term 4, Week 9

Principal's Piece
Dear Parents and Carers
As we move through our last week of school, I would like to thank all of you who have supported our children through your various contributions during this year. Many parents and friends have taken the time to carry out different tasks that, when combined, have had the effect of assisting the education of our children. So, thank you to all.
I would also like to thank members of the wider Kununurra community for your support during the year. Many things go on in the background that contribute to the success of our school, so thank you to those who have supported us in many different ways.
Finally, thank you to the entire staff that has also worked hard to encourage the development and growth of our children. The behind-the-scenes work that goes into the end-product - like the Christmas Concert - are often not obvious to onlookers, so I would like to acknowledge the efforts of staff to ensure that our children have these many and varied opportunities.
All of your hard work is greatly appreciated!
The challenges that we've faced through the pandemic have brought a myriad of changes in thinking across many of our daily activities, and the impacts have been enormous. My sincere hope is that as we move into 2023 the "new" normal will enable us to continue to move forward as a community.
Monday saw us celebrating our achievements of 2022 with a Mass of Thanksgiving. While in some respects it is sad to farewell those moving on to new schools, new work opportunities and new spaces, it is also a time of excitement and anticipation of something new just over the horizon. To everyone moving on we wish you great success with your forthcoming adventures and we know that you will take just a small piece of St Joseph's with you, wherever you go to next!
"You have brains in your head.
You have feet in your shoes.
You can steer yourself in any direction you choose.
You're on your own, and you know what you know.
And you are the guy who'll decide where to go."
~ Dr Seuss ~
On Tuesday we held our 2022 Awards Presentation. Congratulations to ALL of our children on their efforts this year. Well done to those children who received specific class awards. Learning new facts and skills is not always easy, but our children have done exceptionally well in a range of different pursuits. Congratulations!
Last week, a letter was sent to families regarding class groupings for 2023. Parents are asked to understand that specific groupings of children may change due to new enrolments over the holidays. We will be welcoming new families to our St Joseph's community in 2023 and look forward to welcoming all children PP - Year 6 back to school on Wednesday February 1. Our Kindy class will have their first day at school on Friday February 3.
If your family has a little one starting Kindy in 2023, please make contact with us so that we can save a space for them and complete enrolment forms etc.
Thank you to those families who have finalised their school fees for 2022. As announced recently, we have reduced our fees for 2023, so it is hoped that this will support all of our community.
The last question in our series of teasers for the 2023 St Patrick's Quiz night is about our town:
"What is located at 1 Leichhardt Street, Kununurra?"
The answer to last week's question:
"How many gates are there in the Kununurra Diversion Dam?"
is
"There are 20 radial gates in the Diversion Dam."
Finally, I would like to wish everyone a very Holy, Happy and Safe Christmas and an enjoyable holiday break. I look forward to seeing you in 2023.
Some final food for thought....
"Don't cry because it's over. Smile because it happened."
~ Dr Seuss ~
And from Pope Francis' Twitter feed earlier this morning:
PopeFrancis@Pontifex
"I wish you all a good #Advent journey made up of many small gestures of #peace every day: welcoming gestures, gestures of understanding, closeness, forgiveness, and service...Gestures from the heart, like steps towards Bethlehem, towards Jesus, the King of peace."
Go well this week.

Send Your Kids to School
Send your kids to school - it is the best possible way they can get a good education.
If your child misses one 1 day per week of school,
by the time they are in Yr 4 they will have missed 1 whole year of school.
Already they will by 1 year behind expected learning!
It may take some tough love, but it is worth the effort to make your child go to school every day.
Set a good routine from Kindy, don't let them miss a day.
It will give them the best start in life.

Science News
Years 2, 3 and 4/5 ended their Science year today by learning some secondary school level Chemistry! With much excitement, we performed the highly popular elephant toothpaste experiment, learning that we can use a catalyst to break down hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) right before our eyes, to create water (H2O) and oxygen (O). The students were STARS in exploring and understanding how the molecules work and the concept of a catalyst…. We had so much fun - all while remembering that Scientists Stay Safe and Sensible!

Moving House?
If you're leaving Kununurra at the end of this year, please let us know. It will help with our classroom planning for 2023.

No more soft plastics for recycling please...
Unfortunately, we cannot take anymore soft plastics for our recycling bin as the only company in Australia that processes it - REDcycle - has ceased accepting it for the time being. They are hoping to be up and running again in 2023.
In the meantime you could:
- Store your soft plastics until REDcycle resumes collection again or another company takes on the role.
- Choose to buy fewer products in plastic bags.
See ABC News for more details:

Families at St Joseph’s to receive more affordable quality Catholic education
Families at St Joseph’s School will continue to benefit from high quality, Christ-centred and child-focused education in 2023.
Catholic Education Western Australia (CEWA) has announced that the fees parents pay at St Joseph’s will be $739 for a single child in 2023 (see attached email for information about fees for additional children). This compares to current fees of $1,137 for a single child.
The changes to school fees have come about as a result of changes to the overall funding for Catholic schools in Western Australia. Our school and CEWA are able to utilise a greater level of data to inform how we determine fees in a way that better matches our school and community’s unique context.
I hope families will welcome this news as indicative of our school’s commitment to meeting the needs of the Kununurra community we serve. The reduction in fees has been impacted by changes to the Federal Government’s funding model, which is now based on the parent community’s Direct Measure of Income (DMI). We are strongly committed to delivering the highest quality education alongside all our other current programmes offered in 2023 and beyond.
The change in fees is a strong sign of Catholic education’s continued place as the best value for money education option for young people in Western Australia.
