Term 3, Week 10
Principal's Piece
Dear Parents/Carers,
We have officially made it to the last week of Term! I’d like to take this opportunity to thank Shaun Joseph for keeping things running smoothly in my absence these last few weeks. It has been made a lot easier to work remotely knowing the school has been left in such capable hands. Thank you to all the staff who have supported Shaun these last few weeks and who have continued to provide excellent care and education for all of our students.
I would also like to acknowledge the contribution of two members of our School Advisory Council, Rowena Alexander and Brooke Thomas. Rowena Alexander has held the position of Chairperson for the last couple of years before relocating to Perth earlier this term. Thank you, Rowena, for your leadership and support of the school and the advisory council, as well as the time and passion that you so willingly shared with the school. We greatly appreciate your contribution. Thank you also to Brooke Thomas who has held the role of School Advisory Secretary for the last couple of years, serving her role with enthusiasm and diligence whilst also managing the demands of a young family. Thank you Brooke for your contribution and we wish you and your family the best as you prepare to relocate.
Kristen Bunce will be finishing with us in her role as Administration Officer this term as Di Brooks will be returning from Long Service Leave. Kristen has made a tremendous contribution to the school community during her semester with us and we have enjoyed having her as part of the team. We wish Kristen all the best for her relocation back to Perth.
I’d like to advise parents and carers that there will be an increase to the Canteen prices as of next term. As I am sure you are aware the price of groceries has significantly increased throughout this year and we have tried to absorb these increases as much as possible but unfortunately, we are at the point where we need to increase our prices at the canteen. Thankfully this is the first increase this year and we have tried to keep the increases as minimal as possible. Thank you in advance for your understanding with this.
Just a reminder that there is no school on Thursday 22nd September due to the public holiday.
To all the parents/carers thank you for your support over the last 18 months during my time as Principal and I look forward to working with you all again in Term 4 2023. I wish you all a wonderful and relaxing holiday.
Enjoy the rest of your week!
Miss Gabby
Principal

Science Week 2022: Glass, more than meets the eye.
We celebrated Science Week last week with the students making sugar glass cookies, teleidoscopes and amazing marble runs.
On Tuesday, each class took turns in making sugar glass cookies. We first watched a video on how glass is made. We learnt that glass is made from sand, which is a solid, when it is heated up in a furnace it turns into a liquid then as it cools it turns back into a solid, making glass.
We all got a small ball of cookie dough that we shaped into a window shape then filled with crushed up lollies. Then the cookies were put into the oven and cooked for 20 minutes. When the cookies came out of the oven the lollies had melted and when they cooled down, we got to eat them. I was told they tasted unbelievably delicious.
On Wednesday we made teleidoscopes. The kaleidoscope created in this activity is a teleidoscope as it does not contain coloured beads at one end but instead has an open view that can be used to form kaleidoscopic patterns from external objects. By keeping the end open it allows for more investigation with the real world.
We learnt the difference between reflection (the bouncing back of light when it strikes a smooth surface) and refraction (is the process in which light changes its direction as it passes from one medium to another medium).
When we finished making the teleidoscopes we went outside and explored the school using them. This was a very interactive activity that all the students enjoyed.
Our finale of the week was the marble run. Each class produced unique designs of marble runs which were then shown to the rest of the school.
Congratulations to:
Year 1 for The Best Collaborative Marble Run
Year 3 for Making the most creative Marble Run
Year 5/6 for Creating the overall best Marble Run
I have really enjoyed the challenge of organising science week this year, the students were so engaged and took the task of making their marble runs seriously and it showed with the amazing designs we all got to see.
Well done everyone!
Miss Tanya

St Norberts College
Last week, St Norbert’s College visited our school all the way from Perth.
Over 15 students assisted teachers in classrooms across the school throughout the week. St Joseph’s school has had long standing relationship with St Norberts which has seen students visit and assist our school for many, many years. St Norbert’s students call this trip to the Kimberley, the immersion experience. During their time here students visit local community, help out with local aid groups, assist in the local schools such as St Joseph’s and support many other aspects of community in Kununurra. All of our St Joseph students love having St Norbert’s students here and we are very thankful to the college for the work they do in the community and with our school.

Dear Parents/Guardians
In Term 4 of 2022 there will be an official ministerial opening of the new water park here in Kununurra. As part of this exciting event, twenty St Joseph’s students have been asked to participate in the opening proceedings. St Joseph’s School is very excited to be part of the opening and will be taking some time and care in selecting students to attend. Over Week 1 of Term 4 the teachers and leadership will be looking to see who is consistently following our school B.O.A.B.S in order to be selected to attend this exciting event.
Given the nature of the excursion, we will be looking to send students from Years 3 to 6 to represent the school. As week one progresses we will be in contact to let everyone know who has been selected to be part of the grand opening.
