Term 3, Week 9

September 14, 2022

Principal's Piece

Dear Parents/Carers,

This week we have welcomed St Norbert’s College students and teachers back to our school. We have enjoyed welcoming them into our school community and we have especially enjoyed the extra help in the classrooms. We are very happy to host their annual trips up north so thanks for coming once again St Norbert’s.

Child Protection Week was celebrated from the 7th to 13th of September and to coincide with this the Church has a focus on Safeguarding within the Parishes from the 4th – 10th September. The theme for this year is “Every child needs a Fair Go”. Our Church along with all Catholic Churches in Australia adopt and adhere to the National Catholic Safeguarding Standards. The standards apply to all parishes, ministries and agencies under the jurisdiction of the Bishop. The Diocese of Broome is committed to the safety and well-being of children, youth and vulnerable people of its parishes and aims to raise awareness of our collective responsibility to safeguard and promote their welfare. Our parish safeguarding officers are Lee-Lee Morgan and Annetta Italiano. As part of promoting the parishes work with Safeguarding there was a special focus on this year’s theme at our Sunday mass. Members of the parish enjoyed finishing off our very own Kite that was decorated by each class during the previous week. The kite is now proudly on display in the Church and includes fingerprints made by all our students. Check it out next time you are at mass. Thanks to Sr Julianne for promoting this week amongst both our school and parish.

This week we have been celebrating Science Week at St Joseph’s and I would like to thank Miss Tanya for co-ordinating the events of this week. The students have enjoyed participating in the different science activities so far this week. Tuesday was known as biscuit day where stained glass windows were made and Wednesday is all about kaleidoscopes. I know all students are particularly looking forward to showcasing their Marble runs on Friday.

Emma Walker and Leigh Pindan fly to Broome this Wednesday to attend the annual Aboriginal Families As First Educators (AFAFE) Conference. They get to meet with other AFAFE staff from around the state and share ideas and resources. This is a fantastic opportunity for professional development for both of them as well as an opportunity to network with other AFAFE staff. We look forward to hearing about the conference upon their return.

Miss Deb will be taking Long Service Leave for Term 4 2022 and a further year off in 2023. Miss Deb has been employed at the school for almost 9 years and during this time she has made a massive contribution to the school community. As many of you know she is a tireless worker and has an amazing amount of energy, she also has a heart of gold and always goes out of her way to care for each of our students. She has been instrumental in developing and continuing the Mini Vinnies program which has supported so many from our school community. This is all in addition to her exceptional work in the classroom as a Teaching Assistant who always goes above and beyond to meet the needs of her students. We wish Deb and her family all the best as she embarks on a new journey. Miss Deb you will be greatly missed by all students and staff at our school, thank you for your tireless work during your time at St Joseph’s.

Please note a change in date to our final assembly for Term 3 which will now take place on Wednesday 21st September 2022 at 1.20pm in the Library. Please join us for the Pre-Primary assembly item also to farewell staff leaving at the end of this term, Deb, Matilda and Kristen.

As I am sure you are aware Thursday 22nd September has been declared a public holiday as a day of mourning in respect to the Queen. As such there will be NO SCHOOL on Thursday 22nd September.

Enjoy the rest of your week!

Miss Gabby

P&F update

Last week the P&F met together at St Joseph's and had the wonderful opportunity to have a look at the gardening program being led by Mandy Milburn here at the school. This is a very exciting project, and the P&F are keen to plan and assist with this fantastic work moving forward in any way they can.  As we move into Term 4 the P&F are excited to be supporting some exciting events including the planning of 2023 Quiz night. Unfortunately, the St Joseph's Quiz night didn't run in 2022 due to COVID restrictions, but we look forward to 2023 with great enthusiasm.

The P&F are a dedicated group of parents and friends from our St Joseph community that are keen to have more members join the team. If you love what's happening here at the school and have been looking for a way to become more involved, please come to the next meeting in Week 2 of Term 4 on Thursday, the 20thof October. The P&F will be looking to select some key members in our next meeting as we head into 2023.

We look forward to seeing you all there.

Chaplain update:

During term 3 we have been implementing the ‘Seasons of Growth’ program with some of our year 2 and 5/6 students. It has been wonderful to see each one keenly interested in the weekly well-being classes and building their self-knowledge over the 8-week period.

Students have participated in a wide range of activities including group discussions, art/craft, stories, journaling and guided reflection. All are looking forward to the last class this week and the special celebration at the end of term.

Also, during week eight, the student councilors and faction leaders were privileged to have two special leadership development classes organized by ‘Youth With A Mission’ (Broome). Students, through shared discourse and the performance of challenging activities, learnt of the qualities that make a good leader and how to 'bravely' prepare for transition in life (such as high school).

Thank you for your prayers for the children and their programs over this school term.

Look forward to seeing you in term 4

Jamie (Chaplain)

Year 2 - Miss Sophie

We have enjoyed looking at lots of different types of creepy and endangered creatures in Year Two this term. We have learnt many new words to assist us with our learning such as invertebrates, carnivores, mammals, predators and prey. Some animals we have enjoyed learning about have included; Polar Bears, Tarantulas, Hammerhead Sharks and Box Jellyfish.

Each week when we look at our new endangered animal, we read a new fiction book with our focus animal as the main character. We have had lots of laughs reading Clark the Shark – a shark who is learning to “keep his cool at school”, Peanut Butter and Jellyfish – who love going on adventures in the ocean but are trying to navigate their way around a grumpy Crabby, and Bin Chicken (we now love watching the bin chickens walking around school). We have been super excited to introduce a new class pet; some Sea Monkey’s! and we can’t wait to see what they will look like once they grow.

Here are some interesting facts that the Year Two students have learnt:

“If Hammerhead Sharks run out of food, they eat their babies” - Janette

“Polar Bears babies are called cubs” - Indiana

“A tarantula puts his fangs into its prey which turns it into liquid and then it sucks the insides out” - Hugo S

“Hammerhead Sharks get up to 6 metres long and their favourite food is stingrays” - Hunter

“Box Jellyfish tentacles can get up to 3 meters long and they have the most poisonous venom in the world and they are shaped as a box” - Joffrey

“Box Jellyfish have 24 eyes and they have long tentacles and they are invertebrates with no bones and they have a bell” - Kyanna

“Box Jellyfish only live from 9-12 months” - Shania

“Box Jellyfish tentacles can grow up to 3 metres long” – Hugo B

“Tarantulas have eight hairy legs” – Rose-Elle

“Polar Bears can get up to 3 metres tall when standing up” - Finnley

“When Box Jellyfish are in the water, they look invisible, they can be light blue or see through” - Zoe

“Jellyfish survive in water” - Memphis

“Hammerhead Sharks can get up to 6 metres long and when they have babies sometimes, they eat them” - Edna

The Naplan results for 2022 have arrived at St Joseph's school and are ready for distribution as of next Monday the 19th of September from your classroom teacher.  Please take the time to have a look at all the information provided to better understand your child's results.
